11 December 2025 01:05

On 10 December 2025, at elections held at the United Nations in New York, the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected to the UN Commission on Population and Development (CPD) for the term 2026–2030 and to the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) for the term 2025–2029.

Both commissions are functional commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which is the principal body dealing with economic and social issues. Currently, Azerbaijan is also a member of ECOSOC for the period 2025–2027.

The CPD is responsible for shaping international approaches to population dynamics, demographic changes, migration and urbanization, as well as issues related to sustainable development. The CSocD, in turn, carries out activities in areas such as social policy, social protection systems, the rights of vulnerable groups, and the enhancement of welfare.

Representation in these UN commissions will provide an opportunity to present Azerbaijan’s achievements in social protection reforms, innovation in public services, poverty alleviation, and improving the well-being of the population at the international level, as well as to strengthen contributions to and cooperation with the United Nations.
