On 12 November 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, participated and delivered a speech at the high-level roundtable discussions on “Climate finance” organized within the framework of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov and other high-level representatives, including representatives of international financial institutions, investors and financial experts, also participated in the roundtable discussions.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking on behalf of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency at the roundtable discussions, provided detailed information on the priorities of the COP29 Presidency, particularly the activities of the Azerbaijani Presidency in the direction of transforming the climate finance agenda.

It was stressed that eliminating the negative impacts and consequences of climate change requires multilateral solutions and an inclusive process, and that disasters such as deadly floods that occurred in various regions of the world, in Pakistan in 2022, as well as recently in the Caribbean basin, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Chad, Spain and other regions, make finding relevant solutions inevitable.

The importance of the historic agreement reached in Sharm el-Sheikh on the establishment of the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, which coincided with Pakistan’s G-77 Presidency, in the direction of eliminating the consequences of such climate change-related disasters was emphasized.

It was noted that our COP29 Presidency is aimed at raising ambitions and increasing action in combating climate change, which increases the risks of natural disasters and threatens human life and global economic stability. In this direction, it was noted that eliminating the existing gap in the field of climate finance and creating transparent and accessible mechanisms in accordance with the needs of developing countries is as important as attracting financial resources.

It was emphasized that COP29, held in Baku with the call “Solidarity for a Green World”, is an important opportunity in terms of transforming the climate finance agenda, and hope was expressed for the success of COP29 in this direction.
