No:353/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner for Climate Action of the European Union

On 23 September 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner for Climate Action of the European Union (EU), within the framework of the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, discussions were held on the current situation related to the preparatory works for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as well as on cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU in the direction of combating climate change.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other side about the works carried out at the national and international levels within the framework of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency, particularly the negotiation process conducted within the framework of the process and the results achieved.
It was emphasized that Azerbaijan’s Presidency of COP29 actualizes new cooperation opportunities in the relevant field.
It was emphasized that Azerbaijan has built its COP29 Presidency on the basis of inclusiveness and, in this direction, is advancing an active negotiation process with international partners in order to unite efforts in the direction of combating climate change. At the same time, it was stated that other stakeholders, such as a number of international organizations, non-governmental organizations, representatives of the private sector, etc., have also been closely involved in the process.
It was underlined that the COP29 Presidency supports global efforts in the direction of combating climate change.
Taking into account that Azerbaijan at the national level keeps the issue of environmental protection and the transition to renewable energy sources in this direction in the focus of special attention, during the meeting, prospects for cooperation in the field of “green energy”, plans and priorities standing on the agenda of the Republic of Azerbaijan were reviewed.
The other side noted that the inclusive organization of the negotiation process conducted by Azerbaijan within the framework of the COP29 Presidency is commendable, and it was stated that the EU side is ready to provide all necessary support in the organization of the process in this direction.
Along with this, at the meeting, an exchange of views was conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
