On 13 April 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, received Egypt’s candidate for the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Khaled El-Enany.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on current issues on the agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNESCO, Azerbaijan’s position, initiatives put forward by the country, as well as regional matters.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that since becoming a member of UNESCO, Azerbaijan has made significant contributions to the activities of the organization, including the development and promotion of intercultural dialogue. The importance of initiatives such as the “Baku Process,” as well as those in the fields of education and humanitarian cooperation, was emphasized. Recommendations were also presented on issues deemed appropriate to be considered in the candidate’s election program.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also provided detailed information to the other side on the history of the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, the fact of occupation of Azerbaijani territories, and the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov spoke about the destruction of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage by Armenia. It was noted that despite Azerbaijan’s calls to UNESCO for more than 20 years to send a mission to record the destruction and to organize a visit to the territories, Armenia has obstructed such a mission, and that this fact was reflected in UNESCO’s 2005 report.

The candidate was wished success in his election campaign.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
