On 6 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with the delegation led by the Vice President of the World Bank for Europe and Central Asia Antonella Bassani.
During the meeting, the prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the World Bank, as well as issues arising from the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), to be held in our country this year, were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted with satisfaction that a number of projects of importance for our country, including those in the fields of economy, agriculture, energy security, transport and communications, and infrastructure, which are being successfully implemented and continued, contribute to the development of cooperation. It was brought to attention that cooperation within the framework of the World Bank, in turn, provides impetus for expanding our country’s relations with other regional and international financial institutions.
Informing the other side in detail about the substantive negotiation process conducted within the framework of our chairmanship of COP29, as well as the preparations for the 29th session, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that our chairmanship mainly focuses on attracting financial resources and investments to combat global climate change. In this direction, it was noted that the World Bank can play an important platform role in terms of holding contacts aimed at identifying the possible contribution of international financial institutions, along with states, to the process.
Referring to the large-scale restoration and reconstruction works carried out in the territories liberated from occupation in the post-conflict period, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov brought to attention that the work carried out is also aimed at the efficient use of the alternative energy potential of the Garabagh and East Zangezur regions, and that a number of foreign partners have already been involved in relevant projects in this direction.
The counterpart congratulated Azerbaijan on its chairmanship of COP29 and expressed confidence that our country will demonstrate a successful chairmanship experience, as well as expand cooperation with international financial institutions in line with its chairmanship priorities. In particular, the importance of taking steps towards the practical implementation of global commitments to be determined within the framework of COP29 was noted, and it was emphasized that the World Bank is ready to support initiatives in this direction.
At the meeting, views were also exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
