On 19 January 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the State Minister Acting as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ali Mohamed Omar, within the framework of the 19th Summit Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
During the meeting, prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Somalia were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov brought to attention that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, mutual contacts and cooperation within the framework of regional and international organizations contribute to the development of relations. Gratitude was expressed for the consistent support shown by Somalia for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
It was noted that in the field of education, scholarships are allocated by Azerbaijan for students from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and NAM, and the active participation of students from Somalia in these programs was also noted.
The State Minister Acting as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, expressed gratitude for the efforts demonstrated by Azerbaijan during its chairmanship of NAM, particularly for the initiatives put forward to strengthen coordination among the members of the Movement during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as in the post-pandemic period.
During the meeting, views were also exchanged on regional issues of mutual interest.
