Bilateral relations
The People's Republic of China recognized the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 27 December 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 2 April 1992.
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Azerbaijan was established in August 1992, and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the People's Republic of China was established on 3 September 1993.
By the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 29 August 2023, Bunyad Huseynov was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the People's Republic of China.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Azerbaijan Lu Mei presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 17 April 2025.
The Republic of Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to its bilateral relations with the People's Republic of China and is interested in further expanding these relations in all areas.
The relations established at the level of the Heads of State of the two countries, based on mutual trust and friendship, constitute the foundation of the current high dynamics of development observed in the political, economic, military, humanitarian, cultural and other spheres.
As a result of the active political dialogue between the two countries, significant achievements are being attained in the fields of energy, trade and economy, telecommunications, transport and logistics, tourism, and humanitarian affairs.
The “Belt and Road” Initiative, put forward by the People's Republic of China in 2013, has created new opportunities for deepening our bilateral relations. As one of the first countries to support the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Azerbaijan is making a significant contribution to its implementation through the large-scale transport and infrastructure projects it has realized.
Within the framework of the state visit of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to the People's Republic of China on 22–24 April 2025, the “Joint Statement on the Establishment of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China” was signed.

Friendship groups
The working group on Azerbaijan–China inter-parliamentary relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan is headed by Soltan Mammadov.
The working group on China–Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary relations in the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China is headed by Lou Qinjian, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Legal framework
The legal framework between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China comprises 119 documents.
Economic cooperation
Economic cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People's Republic of China covers trade, energy, transport and logistics, telecommunications and other areas. Currently, nearly 50 joint projects covering various sectors are being implemented between the two countries.

In 2025, compared to 2024, trade turnover with the People's Republic of China increased by 30.16%, including a 28.58% increase in imports, while exports increased 4.28-fold.
The growth in imports was mainly due to increased imports of land vehicles and their parts (primarily passenger cars), gold, clothing and clothing accessories, as well as other products.
The growth in exports was mainly due to increased exports of petroleum coke, polyethylene in primary forms, machinery, electrical equipment and their parts, as well as other products.
