The United Mexican States

 

Diplomatic relations between the two states were established on February 10, 1992. The first embassy of Azerbaijan in Latin America was opened in Mexico. Our Embassy in this country is operating since October 2, 2006. The Embassy of Mexico in Azerbaijan is operating since October 1, 2014.

 

In more than 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states our ties have undergone a historical development and our contacts have become productive.

 

During the past period, the Mexican Congress has expressed open support for the right cause of Azerbaijan. In 2011, the Mexican Senate and Chamber of Deputies adopted documents recognizing Armenia's military aggression against Azerbaijan and the Khojaly genocide.

 

The current state of our bilateral relations were reviewed once again and new directions of cooperation were determined within the framework of the 3rd round of political consultations held in Mexico City with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Elnur Mammadov on May 4, 2023. The two sides expressed their commitment and mutual support for the promotion of joint initiatives in political, economic, humanitarian, sports, tourism and other fields. 

 

On October 1, 2024 Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Elnur Mammadov visited Mexico on to participate in the official swearing-in ceremony of Mrs. Claudia Sheinbaum, the newly elected President of the United States of Mexico.


Cultural exchange programs between the two states, as well as contacts with scientific and educational institutions of the two countries took more intensive character in recent years. Currently, a work is underway to sign twinning agreements between the respective cities and municipalities of the two states.

 

Effective activities and close cooperation between the two states have also been carried out in the framework of international organizations. 
 

Mutual visits of the heads of state/government 

 

There were no visits at the level of the heads of state/government of the two nations.

 

Visits of Foreign Ministers

 

So far, 3 visits to Mexico have been made at the level of the foreign minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan (in 2011, 2012 and 2018).
There was no visit to Azerbaijan at the level of the Mexican foreign minister. 
 

Inter-parliamentary relations

 

The first working group on Azerbaijan-Mexico inter-parliamentary relations was established in the Milli Majlis (parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2005. The first Mexico-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group in the Chamber of Deputies of the Mexican Congress was established in 2010.

 

Contacts between the respective friendship groups of the two countries have become more intensive, especially in recent years. From February 24 to March 4, 2023, the members of the Mexico-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group serving in the Chamber of Deputies of the Mexican Congress visited Azerbaijan and held useful meetings in the Milli Majlis (parliament), Western Azerbaijan Community, and the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The parliament delegation also visited the city of Shusha, pearl of the culture of Azerbaijan. The friendship group made number of statements in support of Azerbaijan both during the 44-day Patriotic War and after it.

 

On November 23-28, 2024, deputies of the Milli Majlis - head of the working group on inter-parliamentary relations with Mexico, Jala Aliyeva and member of the working group, Elshad Mirbashiroghlu, made a working visit to Mexico, and had fruitful meetings in the Chamber of Deputies of the Mexican Congress, as well as in the congresses of the states of Jalisco and Hidalgo of Mexico, reached important agreements aimed at promoting parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries. On April 23, 2024, the congratulatory video message of the Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova was released at the plenary session of the Senate of Mexico on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Senate. All these measures have once again confirmed that parliamentary diplomacy between our countries has entered into the path of active development.

So far, 5 documents have been signed between the two states. 

 

Cooperation in the economic sphere (main directions and trade turnover for 2020-2024)

 

In recent years, there has been an increase in the trade turnover of the two states. At present, favorable business/investment environment, modern transit-trade infrastructure and opportunities to enter new regional markets provide a promising prospects for Mexican businessmen in Azerbaijan. The organization of mutual visits of acquaintance between the trade missions and tourism agencies of the two states is expected in the coming years.

The main goods of export from Azerbaijan to Mexico: technical equipment, mechanical devices and parts, jet kerosene fuel, excavators, equipment for electricity distribution.

 

The main goods import from Mexico to Azerbaijan: sugar, passenger cars, machinery, electrotechnical equipment and parts, optical, medical, photographic and precision instruments, ferrous metal products, dark spirits (mainly tequila), paints and varnishes, peas, beer, etc.
