The Argentine Republic

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Argentina were established on November 8, 1993. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Argentina was established on April 1, 2010. The Embassy of the Republic of Argentina in the Republic of Azerbaijan has been operating since 2012. 

Currently, Azerbaijani-Argentine relations are developing in political, economic, humanitarian, culture, tourism, media and other areas, both bilaterally and within the framework of international organizations. Inter-parliamentary relations between the countries are developing, and friendship groups are actively operating.

To date, there have been no visits at the level of the heads of state of the two countries. Mutual visits between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Argentina were carried out in 2012 (to Azerbaijan) as well as in 2006, 2012 and 2019 (to Argentina). On April 29, 2019, Chairman of the House of Representatives of Argentina Emilio Monzo visited Azerbaijan.  

In recent years, joint contacts, including parliamentary diplomacy, have been carried out between the officials of Argentina and Azerbaijan. In 2023, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries was celebrated. Despite the political tension between the two countries after the biased statements made by the Argentine government against our country in September of last year, a lot of work was done in the redevelopment of relations with the new leadership of the Republic of Argentina. 

In 2018, AIDA provided necessary equipment to Special School No. 371 for children with physical disabilities in the province of La Rioja, Argentina (the amount is worth 18 thousand manats).

In terms of relatively neutralizing the activities of the large Armenian diaspora and lobby against our country in Argentina, teaching and promoting the truths about Azerbaijan at the academic level, funds in the amount of 30 thousand US dollars have been allocated to continue the activities of the Faculty of Azerbaijani Studies operating at the Institute of International Relations of the National University of La Plata of the Argentine Republic in 2024. In order to support the fight against coronavirus, within the framework of our chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2021, Argentina was provided with assistance in the amount of 300 thousand US dollars through the World Health Organization.

Inter-parliamentary relations

The Working Group for the Azerbaijan-Argentina Inter-parliamentary Relations was established on December 13, 2005. Due to the early parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan on September 1, 2024, the new composition of the group has not yet been formed. 

The Argentina-Azerbaijan Friendship Groups in the Senate and House of Representatives of the National Congress of the Republic of Argentina were established in 2012.

On July 15, 2024, the composition of the inter-parliamentary friendship group with Azerbaijan for the years 2024-2025 was approved in the Honorary Senate of the National Congress of Argentina. The members are as follows:

Cooperation in the economic sphere (main directions and trade turnover for 2021-2023)

There is joint working group on trade and economic cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Argentina. The group was established in accordance with the "Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Argentina" signed in July 2012. Currently, the head of the working group from Azerbaijan is Sahib Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Economy. Due to the change of government after the recent elections in Argentina, a new leader has not yet been appointed.

The first meeting of the group was held on November 26, 2014 in Buenos Aires. As a result of the said meeting, a Protocol was signed between the two countries covering issues of cooperation in the fields of industry, energy, agriculture, communication and high technologies, the environment. Strengthening trade relations, increasing trade turnover at a low level, promoting mutual investment, cooperation in the field of pharmaceuticals, exchange of information and experience in various fields of agriculture are the main areas of cooperation that  the protocol focuses on.   

In 2023, the volume of trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the Republic of Argentina, including imports, amounted to 55.75 million US dollars, and the foreign trade balance was negative and amounted to 55.75 million US dollars. Compared to 2022, in 2023, trade turnover with the Republic of Argentina decreased by 22.48 percent, including import by 8.01 percent, and no export operations were carried out. In 2023, the share of the Republic of Argentina in the foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan amounted to 0.11 percent (47th place), including 0.32 percent (36th place) in imports. 

In January-March 2024, the volume of trade turnover between our countries, including imports, amounted to 15.07 million US dollars, and the foreign trade balance was negative - 15.07 million US dollars.

The volume of direct investment flows (1995-2023): from Argentina to Azerbaijan - 4 million US dollars (non-oil sector); From Azerbaijan to Argentina - not registered.The remaining amount of investments of the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan (as of 31.12.2023) amounted to 10 million US dollars.
