No:188/25, Press release on the meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani

On 7 May 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, within the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Iraq, met with the Prime Minister of this country Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani.
During the meeting, various aspects of Azerbaijan–Iraq cooperation, the current situation in the Middle East, as well as other regional and international security issues of mutual interest were discussed.
It was noted with satisfaction that although diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq were established after the restoration of our independence, the history of relations between our peoples dates back further. In order to preserve this dynamic, the importance of increasing mutual visits and contacts at all levels, including state, parliamentary, governmental, and foreign ministries, was emphasized.
During the meeting, political, economic, trade, energy, and humanitarian aspects of cooperation were discussed, and it was noted that there are good opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation and that both sides are interested in this direction.
The sides also discussed the situation in the Middle East, particularly around the Gaza region, and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Azerbaijan’s support for the resolution of the Israel–Palestine conflict on the basis of the “two-state” principle, in accordance with the norms of international law and relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, was once again emphasized.
The chairmanship of Azerbaijan at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) was discussed, and the importance of the achievements made during the session held in our country was noted.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the counterpart about the situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, the large-scale reconstruction and rebuilding works carried out in the liberated territories, demining activities, as well as the Azerbaijan–Armenia normalization process. It was noted that bilateral negotiations on the text of the peace agreement initiated by our country have been finalized, however, in order to ensure lasting peace in the region through the signing of this agreement, it is important to eliminate territorial claims against our country enshrined in the Constitution of Armenia and a number of legislative acts.
Other issues of mutual interest were also discussed during the meeting.
