On 15 November 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, participated and delivered a speech at the high-level panel on “Climate and Peace: Enabling Joint Action to Leave No One Behind” within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that the existing link between climate change and conflicts, food and water scarcity and land degradation resulting from climate change threaten people’s life and health, cause consequences such as disruption of biodiversity and, as a result, pose a threat to peace and sustainable development.

In this regard, the importance of the “Truce Appeal” initiative of the COP29 Presidency, which has already been supported by 130 countries and 1200 actors in total, was emphasized.

In the speech, the importance of establishing Peace, Stability and Relief Day for the second time in the history of COPs held to date, establishing a joint partnership on climate and peace with Germany, Egypt, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Uganda, as well as announcing the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Stability and Relief, which offers solutions related to the critical consequences of climate change, was noted.

In this direction, confidence was expressed that the establishment of the Baku Climate and Peace Action Hub in terms of transforming existing proposals into concrete steps, as well as the mobilization of financial and other technical resources, will produce inclusive outcomes, particularly in terms of supporting small island states, as well as least developed states.

Thanking for the high trust and support shown to our country, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that, as reflected in the priorities of our COP29 Presidency, we will continue to support the most vulnerable groups hereafter in the direction of eliminating the consequences of climate change, as well as supporting peace and development.
