No:445/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Ivana Živković, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director of the Regional Bureau of the United Nations Development Programme

On 14 November 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Ivana Živković, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who is on a visit to our country within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

 

During the meeting, issues standing on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and UNDP, as well as arising from Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency, were discussed.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, noting the existence of successful mutually beneficial cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNDP, particularly noted the implementation of joint projects in the direction of advancing the sustainable development agenda, the establishment of the National Coordination Council for Sustainable Development as an indicator of our country’s systematic approach to this field, and that 3 Voluntary National Reviews have been submitted by our side to date.

 

The efforts to combat the mine threat in the liberated territories of our country were discussed in detail.

 

Azerbaijan’s development strategy based on broad green energy potential, regional and international projects in the field of green energy, particularly the initiative to create a green energy corridor by connecting the Caspian and Black Sea basins, were discussed. In this direction, the importance of the “Agreement on Strategic Partnership in the field of green energy development and transmission between the Governments of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Uzbekistan” signed within the framework of COP29 was noted.

 

The importance of active participation of international organizations, including UNDP, in the direction of advancing the topic of climate finance, which is the main priority of our COP29 Presidency, was emphasized.

 

The achievement of agreement on Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement from the first day within the framework of COP29 held in Baku, the progress ensuring the operationalization of the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage, as well as the increase by multilateral development banks of the commitment for climate finance from 75 billion to 170 billion US dollars on an annual basis, were assessed as significant achievements.

 

The other side stated that cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNDP in various fields causes satisfaction, that UNDP attaches special importance particularly to the field of combating the mine threat, and that in this direction, joint activity is being carried out with the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA) on the establishment of the International Centre of Excellence and Training for Mine Action in Azerbaijan.

 

At the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
