On 12 November 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, participated and delivered a speech at the high-level event on “Glaciers-2025: Global action for glacier preservation” organized within the framework of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit of the 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, as well as other high-ranking officials also participated in the high-level event.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking at the high-level event, thanked the Tajik side for organizing this important event dedicated to the topic of glaciers, which, despite in most cases remaining outside attention, constitute one of the main parts of our ecosystem.
It was stated that the melting of glaciers in many regions of the world causes dangerous disasters such as floods and landslides.
It was stressed that glaciers rapidly disappearing due to climate change, including in our country, especially in the Greater Caucasus Mountains and the Gusarchay basin, have decreased by more than 18% over 7 years, which causes uneven distribution of river resources and a decrease in overall freshwater resources.
Despite the fact that the problem of melting glaciers is a serious threat, coordinated steps taken in this direction are limited, and in this regard, hope was expressed that the “International Year of Glacier Preservation” to be declared next year will be productive.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov invited all international partners to strengthen cooperation in the relevant field towards ensuring the balance of our ecosystem for future generations.
