On 9 October, a meeting was held between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, and Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
During the meeting, the current state and prospects of Azerbaijan–UN relations, preparation processes related to the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), and the priorities of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency were discussed.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, highlighting the importance of Azerbaijan’s role in multilateral diplomacy, as well as in UN institutions, highly appreciated the activities carried out by our country in the direction of organizing COP29. Along with this, the importance of the outcome document adopted during the Summit of the Future, which also reflected elements such as peace and security, new technologies, and the financial architecture of the future, was emphasized.
The sides then reviewed the achievements of our country in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and noted with satisfaction the significant progress in this work.
Minister J. Bayramov, providing detailed information on the negotiation process conducted within the framework of COP29 chaired by Azerbaijan, stressed that efforts are being made to determine a new quantified finance goal to meet the financial resources required in the fight against climate change, and the importance of consensus for this. The sides emphasized the importance of the support of the UN and international financial institutions in this direction. At the same time, information was provided on support for the 14 initiatives put forward by the COP29 Presidency in various directions.
At the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
