On 28 September 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, within the framework of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

At the meeting, the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the United Nations, Azerbaijan’s preparatory works for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Azerbaijan highly appreciates cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies. In particular, it was stressed that our active cooperation within the framework of our COP29 Presidency plays an important role in the successful implementation of the Presidency.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, informing the other side in detail about priority directions and Presidency initiatives within the framework of our COP29 Presidency, stated that active work is being carried out within the framework of COP29, particularly in the direction of agreeing on the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance.

Detailed information was provided on the current situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, restoration and construction works aimed at ensuring the dignified return of former internally displaced persons to their homes, as well as the Azerbaijan–Armenia normalization process, bilateral negotiations, and the main challenges standing in the way of the signing of the peace treaty.

Despite a number of progress achieved within the framework of the bilateral negotiation process, it was emphasized that territorial claims against our country in the Constitution of Armenia, as well as other legislative acts, are the main obstacle to peace.

At the meeting, an exchange of views was conducted on new areas of cooperation and other topics of mutual interest.
