No:384/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Rabab Fatima, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States

On 27 September 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Rabab Fatima, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, within the framework of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

 

During the meeting, the sides discussed existing cooperation issues between Azerbaijan and the United Nations, as well as Azerbaijan’s Presidency activities and preparation process for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that cooperation with the United Nations and its institutions is one of the directions to which Azerbaijan attaches special attention, and that our country actively participates in projects implemented by the Organization.

 

The importance of taking relevant steps and joining efforts with other Member States in order to preserve peace and security in the region and the world, as well as to achieve the United Nations “Sustainable Development Goals”, was emphasized. It was noted that Azerbaijan is always ready for coordinated activity aimed at resolving international problems of an economic, social, cultural and humanitarian character.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, providing detailed information about the preparatory works for the session and the negotiation process conducted within the framework of the COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan, stated that our country, guided by the principle of inclusiveness, particularly keeps in the focus of attention the support for the efforts of the least developed, landlocked and small island countries in combating climate change.

 

High Representative Rabab Fatima highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s cooperation and participation in relevant projects and expressed confidence that joint initiatives will contribute to expanding the transport opportunities of landlocked countries of the region. At the same time, she noted that the steps taken towards the realization of the “Sustainable Development Goals”, particularly the works carried out within the framework of the Presidency of COP29, are among the indicators of Azerbaijan’s successful participation in the work of the Organization.

 

Along with this, at the meeting, an exchange of views was conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
