On 25 September 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), within the framework of his participation in the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
At the meeting, issues on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and UNAOC, future plans and joint projects, as well as the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period were discussed.
It was highlighted that Azerbaijan has successful and productive cooperation with UNAOC, and the activities of the High Representative, who has personally contributed to the development of the dynamics of our cooperation, were particularly noted.
The role played by Azerbaijan in inter-civilizational dialogue was discussed, and the importance of joint projects implemented in this direction was spoken about.
The other side was informed in detail about the current situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, as well as the normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
It was expressed that during the nearly 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani territories, our country faced large-scale and destructive consequences not only in the humanitarian field, but also in the field of culture, and that our cultural heritage was deliberately subjected to looting, destruction and illegal alterations.
Despite the grave humanitarian consequences of the occupation period, it was stressed that immediately after the end of the conflict, Azerbaijan came forward with the peace agenda initiative and was the most active side in advancing the normalization process. It was emphasized that there are a number of outstanding issues hindering the signing of the peace treaty, and particularly that the continuing territorial claims against our country in a number of legislative acts, including the Constitution of Armenia, hinder the advancement of the peace agenda.
During the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
