No:349/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic Paulo Rangel

On 23 September 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, Paulo Rangel, within the framework of the high-level week of the 79th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).

 

During the meeting, prospects for bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Portugal in political, economic, energy, cultural, humanitarian and other fields, as well as multilateral cooperation within international organizations, and the current regional and international situation were discussed.

 

The importance of utilizing the political consultations mechanism for discussing prospects of developing cooperation between the two countries was emphasized.

 

It was noted that Azerbaijan successfully cooperates with a number of European countries in the field of energy security, and that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on a Strategic Partnership in the field of energy between Azerbaijan and the European Union is a reflection of this. In this regard, it was stated that Azerbaijan  is ready for practical cooperation with a number of European countries, including Portugal, in the development of alternative energy sources.

 

Confidence was expressed that Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will make a significant contribution to combating climate change, and it was emphasized that it creates broad prospects for expanding cooperation between the two countries.

 

The importance of Azerbaijan’s strategic geographical location, including the opportunities created by projects and initiatives implemented by Azerbaijan for the development of the Middle Corridor, was noted.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the other side in detail about the situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, large-scale restoration and reconstruction works carried out in the liberated territories, efforts to combat the mine threat, as well as the progress of the normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

 

It was emphasized that the continuing claims against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Armenia’s Constitution remain the main obstacle to the peace process.

 

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
