On 24 July 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan.
The one-on-one meeting between the ministers was later continued in an expanded format with the participation of delegations.
During the meeting, the current state and prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Somalia, as well as issues on the regional and international agenda, were discussed.
It was noted with satisfaction that contacts between the two countries have intensified in recent years, and the number of mutual visits has increased.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of utilizing existing potential to further deepen cooperation between Azerbaijan and Somalia in political, economic, humanitarian, and other fields.
It was stated that there are favorable opportunities to expand cooperation in agriculture, fisheries, oil and gas industry, green energy, humanitarian, and education sectors. The participation of the Somali delegation in the ADEX exhibition was recalled, and it was noted that there are broad prospects for cooperation in the defense industry.
It was also noted that the visit of the Azerbaijani government delegation to Somalia in February this year and the holding of the first round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs within this framework created a basis for identifying areas of cooperation and developing new initiatives between the two countries.
During the meeting, along with bilateral relations, the importance of cooperation within multilateral international and regional platforms, particularly within the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement, was emphasized. In this regard, cooperation during Somalia’s non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for 2025–2026 was commended, and confidence was expressed that relations based on mutual support will continue in the future. It was also noted that there are broad prospects for cooperation between the two countries during Azerbaijan’s hosting of the OIC Summit and its chairmanship of the organization in 2026.
During the meeting, an in-depth exchange of views was also held on other issues of mutual interest.
At the end of the meeting, the ministers delivered statements at a joint press conference.
