No:306/25, Press release on the election of a representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the post of Secretary General of the International Civil Defence Organization

On 10 July 2025, within the framework of the 3rd extraordinary session of the General Assembly of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO) held in the city of Baku, a representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected for the first time to the post of Secretary General of the Organization.

 

The elections were held in a highly competitive environment. Alongside the Head of Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Arguj Kalantarli, candidates from three other countries competed for the position of Secretary General of the ICDO.

 

The candidate of the Republic of Azerbaijan secured the support of the majority of participating countries in the first round of voting (23 countries) and was elected to the post of Secretary General of the prestigious organization.

 

As the only intergovernmental organization in the field of civil defence, the ICDO’s main objective is to ensure the protection of and assistance to the population during natural and man-made disasters, strengthen the capacities of structures engaged in eliminating the consequences of such disasters, and promote international cooperation in this field.

 

The Secretary General of the ICDO is the highest position within the organization and is responsible for representing it at the international level, leading its structural units, ensuring the functionality of the Secretariat, and overseeing other important areas.
