No:225/25, Press release on the meeting between Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi Zainab Hawa Bangura

On 3 June 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, within the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Kenya, met with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi Zainab Hawa Bangura.

 

During the meeting, various aspects of Azerbaijan–United Nations cooperation, possible joint initiatives related to African countries, Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), as well as the regional situation in the post-conflict period were discussed.

 

It was noted that there is a fruitful cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the United Nations and its specialized agencies, that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) occupy a special place in our partnership, and that our country’s voluntary and regular submission of reports on the implementation of the sustainable development agenda is an indication of the importance we attach to this direction.

 

It was stated that advancing cooperation with African countries is one of the priorities of our foreign policy, that a number of initiatives have been implemented in this direction within the framework of the United Nations to date, and that we intend to continue this cooperation.

 

The importance of the decisions adopted within the framework of COP29 held in our country in advancing the financial dimension of combating climate change was highlighted. In this context, issues of cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme were also touched upon.

 

At the same time, cooperation plans with the United Nations Office, particularly with UN-Habitat, within the framework of the World Urban Forum to be held in our country in 2026 were reviewed.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also informed the other side in detail about the former conflict, the current situation and realities in the region in the post-conflict period, the large-scale reconstruction and rebuilding efforts carried out in the liberated territories, as well as efforts to combat the mine threat.

 

During the meeting, other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
