No:144/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Elders, Mohamed Abdelsalam

On 2 April 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Elders, Mohamed Abdelsalam.

During the meeting, issues of cooperation with the Muslim Council of Elders, preparations for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), threats against Islam at the international level, and matters of religious solidarity were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that our country attaches great importance to promoting unity and solidarity in the Islamic world, and emphasized the importance of developing mutual support and cooperation at bilateral, as well as regional and international multilateral levels.

Referring to the projects implemented by our country to promote intercultural dialogue, including efforts to combat dangerous trends such as Islamophobia, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that anti-Islam policies pursued in France and some other European countries are a matter of serious concern.

Secretary General Mohamed Abdelsalam emphasized that Azerbaijan’s contributions to cooperation in the Islamic world, as well as its position in the post-conflict period and its role as a proponent of peace initiatives, are highly appreciated. It was noted that, in line with last years’ experience, it is important for religious leaders to put forward joint initiatives related to combating climate change within the framework of COP29 this year as well.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
