On 1–2 December 2025, the 16th Meeting of the States Parties to the Second Protocol of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was held.
Within the framework of the meeting, the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected as a member of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict for the period 2025–2029.
A total of six countries, including Azerbaijan, competed for four vacant seats. As a result of the competitive elections, Azerbaijan secured the majority of votes in the first round of voting.
It should be noted that the Committee was established to ensure the protection of cultural property during armed conflicts, to monitor compliance with the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention and its Second Protocol, and to promote the provision of technical, legal, and institutional support to states in this field.
The election of Azerbaijan to the Committee reflects the country’s positive international image in the field of cultural heritage protection, its active engagement on international platforms, and its consistent policy in this area.
Azerbaijan previously served as a member of the Committee for the period 2021–2025.
