No:270/25, Press release on the election of the Republic of Azerbaijan as Chair of the Bureau of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme
24 June 2025 14:25
On 24 June 2025, within the framework of the Committee of the Permanent Representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP CPR), Azerbaijan was elected for the first time as Chair of the UNEP CPR Bureau.
Our country’s Chairmanship of the CPR Bureau will cover the period of 2025–2027.
The UNEP CPR is the main standing body of the United Nations Environment Assembly, which has 193 member states and determines priorities on environmental issues at the international level. The CPR Bureau performs a number of important functions in preparing decisions of the Assembly on global environmental policy and norms.
Azerbaijan’s Chairmanship in the Bureau will be represented by our country’s Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UNEP, Sultan Hajiyev.
It should be noted that Azerbaijan, which hosted COP29 in November 2024 and has gained international recognition through its global activities and initiatives in environmental protection and combating climate change, has been developing its cooperation with UNEP dynamically.
Azerbaijan’s election as Chair, as well as its confirmation as the host of the World Environment Day (WED2026) to be held in 2026, demonstrates the prospects of this cooperation.
