The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Fariz Rzayev, participated in the OSCE Malta Chairmanship High-Level Conference on Climate Change held in Malta on 21 June of the current year.

During the conference, the impact of climate change on security in the OSCE area, the current situation, and opportunities for joint efforts to combat climate change were discussed.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister Fariz Rzayev noted that Azerbaijan is also affected by climate change and provided information on the work carried out in combating this challenge. It was noted that Azerbaijan supports the decision adopted by the OSCE Ministerial Council in Stockholm in 2021 on strengthening cooperation to address the challenges posed by climate change, and it was emphasized that our country actively participates in several regional projects of the OSCE.

It was stated that it is envisaged to transform the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from long-term military occupation into a green energy zone, as well as to implement smart village and smart city concepts there. This will contribute to efforts to combat climate change.

The Deputy Minister noted that 2024 has been declared the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” in Azerbaijan and stated that our country will also host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November of the current year. Information was provided on our country’s vision regarding COP29, and it was noted that this event will contribute to international efforts to combat climate change.

Within the framework of the conference, Deputy Minister Fariz Rzayev also met with the OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Christopher Cutajar, and an exchange of views was held on issues of mutual interest.
