On 14 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov participated and delivered a speech at the panel discussion on “On war and peace: the return of ‘realpolitik’” organized within the framework of the XI Global Baku Forum.

In his speech, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that in order to understand the existing crises and challenges in the current international relations system, as well as to respond to them, it is first of all important to properly understand how the modern system functions, as well as how it differs from previous systems.

It was emphasized that a number of tools that existed years ago to combat global threats, including international organizations, by demonstrating a selective approach today through expressing the interests of only a limited number of countries, not only render the said mechanisms ineffective, but also lead to a loss of trust in them.

The importance of understanding the reality that the modern international relations system consists of numerous independent countries with their own national interests and concerns, as well as actors that have become regional actors and “middle powers” in their respective regions was noted.

It was brought to attention that existing mechanisms, having been established more in response to classical challenges, are unable to be productive in addressing modern challenges such as climate change and non-traditional challenges such as artificial intelligence.

It was emphasized that against the background of the existing international instruments failing to justify themselves in the current international relations conjuncture, our country attaches importance to the development of regional cooperation, particularly to strengthening partnership with neighboring states.
