No:045/24, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Zhang Ming

On 6 February 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Zhang Ming, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan in connection with the observation of the extraordinary Presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the SCO, as well as issues related to the extraordinary Presidential elections, were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that Azerbaijan’s existing cooperation with SCO members determines Azerbaijan’s activity within the framework of the Organization and contributes to mutual dialogue. It was stated that Azerbaijan, as a dialogue partner of the SCO, conducts beneficial cooperation with the Organization on regional security issues, including the advancement of communication projects such as the East-West and North-South transport corridors.

It was noted that Azerbaijan attaches importance to cooperation with the SCO, which has a special position and weight in the Eurasian space, and that it is important to assess the existing prospects for cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, investments, humanitarian affairs, tourism and other areas in this direction. At the same time, taking into account that 2024 has been declared the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” in Azerbaijan, as well as the holding in Azerbaijan of such a prestigious event as the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), it was emphasized that there are broad opportunities for cooperation in the field of ecology.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that the extraordinary Presidential elections to be held on 7 February are significant in that, for the first time after nearly 30 years of occupation, they will be held in all our territories, as well as in that citizens returning to their homes as a result of the reconstruction and restoration works carried out in our territories liberated from occupation will exercise their electoral rights in their native lands for the first time.

The other side was also provided with detailed information on the work carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the organization of the electoral process for our citizens currently residing and operating in foreign countries.

Secretary General Zhang Ming expressed gratitude for the invitation to observe the extraordinary Presidential elections and wished success to Azerbaijan in the organization of the elections. The Secretary General emphasized that the high-level organization of the preparatory process for the elections is a source of great satisfaction.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
