Bilateral relations
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and New Zealand were established on 29 June 1992. In 2022, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations was celebrated.
The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Commonwealth of Australia is concurrently accredited to New Zealand, and the Embassy of New Zealand in the Republic of Türkiye is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Vagif Jafarov is Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Azerbaijan to New Zealand.
On 17 December 2024, Greg Lewis was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of New Zealand to the Republic of Azerbaijan (resident in Ankara). The Ambassador has not yet presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Inter-parliamentary relations
The New Zealand–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Parliament of New Zealand was established in 2016 and was chaired by Todd Muller from 8 October 2016. Since the election of the 52nd Parliament in 2017, parliamentary friendship groups in New Zealand have been organized on a regional basis. Azerbaijan is currently represented in the New Zealand–Europe Friendship Group.
Friendship groups
The working group on Azerbaijan–New Zealand inter-parliamentary relations in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan is headed by Asim Mollazade (re-elected on 24 April 2024).
Legal framework
Currently, there is no legal framework between the Republic of Azerbaijan and New Zealand.
