On 28 October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov received UN Deputy Secretary-General and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva Tatiana Valovaya.
At the meeting, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that 2022 is of symbolic significance in terms of the 30th anniversary of Azerbaijan's membership of the UN. In this regard, he touched upon the important initiatives organized both in Shusha, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, and in Baku, and it was recalled that, as one of the active members of the UN, Azerbaijan has made broad contributions in a number of areas, particularly at the international level in the fields of peace and security, sustainable development and humanitarian affairs.
Attention was drawn at the meeting to the fact that our country's new development strategy for the post-pandemic and post-conflict period for 2022-2026 runs parallel to the agenda of the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It was emphasized that Azerbaijan is among the few countries in the world, and the first in our region, to have presented voluntary reports on the implementation of this agenda. In this regard, it was noted that Azerbaijan's inclusion among the top 50 in the "Sustainable Development Report 2022" is an example of our country's commitment to its global obligations regarding the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov briefed the other side on the current situation in the region, including Armenia's large-scale provocations, and on the steps being taken towards eliminating the consequences of the nearly 30-year-long occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan. In this regard, the Minister touched upon the peace agenda, the restoration and reconstruction works being carried out in the liberated territories, and the process of the return of internally displaced persons to the region, and spoke of the importance of enhancing international efforts and exchanging experience towards eliminating the threat of mines in our territories.
Tatiana Valovaya expressed satisfaction with her latest visit to Azerbaijan and touched upon the significance of the photo exhibition dedicated to the women of Azerbaijan, embodying the Sustainable Development Goals, held today at the Heydar Aliyev Center on the joint initiative of the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. She noted that the aim of the project, implemented for the first time in Azerbaijan, is to support the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and to contribute to their realization. At the meeting, T. Valovaya also highly appreciated the efforts made towards the peace process.
The sides also exchanged views on various aspects of the UN agenda and other topical issues at the meeting.
