08 September 2023 21:53

On 8 September 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov held a telephone conversation with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the EU Commission.

During the telephone conversation, prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union, the current situation in the region and the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process were discussed.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov conveyed Azerbaijan’s position regarding the latest situation in the region to the other side. He emphasized that Armenia’s ongoing military-political provocations and statements against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan do not serve peace and stability in the region. He noted that it is important to prevent these provocations by Armenia.

Detailed information was provided about Armenia’s continued abuse of the Lachin road for illegal military and other purposes for approximately two and a half years, and it was stated that the allegations it currently disseminates regarding the “humanitarian situation in the region” without any basis are political manipulation. It was emphasized that, despite the agreement reached on the simultaneous transportation of cargo through the Aghdam-Khankendi and Lachin-Khankendi roads, the violation of these agreements and the obstruction committed against the transportation once again prove this.

It was emphasized that the Armenian armed forces, which have still not been withdrawn from the territories of Azerbaijan and are directly supported by Armenia, are the main source of threat in the region.

During the telephone conversation, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
