No: 300/26 Press Release on the Meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with the New UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko

On 6 July, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov received the newly appointed United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmytro Shlapachenko.

 

At the meeting, an exchange of views was held on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the UN, the prospects for partnership, as well as regional and international security issues.

 

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the long-standing and effective cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN is developing successfully in various directions. It was noted that next year will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, and that this landmark date creates important opportunities for further strengthening the partnership.

 

Emphasizing our country's active role in contributing to addressing global challenges, the sides noted that Azerbaijan has successfully hosted a number of important international events in recent years, and that, in particular, the high-level organization of COP29 and the World Urban Forum is an indication of the importance attached to multilateral cooperation. In this regard, it was noted that the signing of the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework covering the years 2026-2030 marks a new stage of cooperation with the UN system. At the same time, attention was drawn to the fact that Azerbaijan would continue to host a number of internationally significant events in the future.

 

At the meeting, mention was made of Azerbaijan's role as a reliable bridge between Europe and Asia, the projects being implemented towards the expansion of transport and communication links, the growing importance of the Middle Corridor, as well as the development of cooperation with Central Asian countries, including the new opportunities emerging within the framework of the "C6" cooperation format.

 

Touching upon regional security issues, the Minister provided information on the realities that have emerged in the region in the post-conflict period, the large-scale restoration and reconstruction works being carried out in the liberated territories, and the measures being taken towards ensuring the safe and dignified return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands.

 

Speaking about the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process, the Minister emphasized the importance of making use of the existing opportunities to ensure sustainable peace.

 

The Minister wished the other side success in his activities. The new UN Resident Coordinator Dmytro Shlapachenko expressed his satisfaction at working in Azerbaijan, and noted that the UN is interested in further developing cooperation with the country in all areas and in strengthening partnership in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

 

The meeting also featured an exchange of views on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
