On 17 April 2023, a telephone conversation was held between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and Dereck Hogan, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs of the United States.
During the telephone conversation, topical issues on the cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the United States, the current situation in the region, including the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia, were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, speaking about the existence of a bilateral and multilateral cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the United States in various fields, noted the importance of mutual contacts in the development of relations. He emphasized that the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period and the continued military-political provocations committed by Armenia undermine Azerbaijan’s peace and construction efforts. In this regard, information was provided that Armenia still has not withdrawn its armed forces from the territory of Azerbaijan, hinders Azerbaijan’s efforts to reintegrate Armenian residents, and opposes the proposal to establish a border checkpoint in order to prevent the abuse of the Lachin road. It was stated that, despite the non-constructive steps taken by Armenia, Azerbaijan is determined to continue efforts towards advancing the peace agenda.
Dereck Hogan stated that it is important for the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia to be successfully concluded and for existing issues to be resolved through negotiations in order to establish lasting peace and security in the region. He emphasized that the United States is ready to support the peace process.
During the telephone conversation, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
