On 27 March 2023, a telephone conversation was held between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and United States Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried.
During the telephone conversation, the sides discussed current issues on the bilateral cooperation agenda between the two countries, the current situation in the region, as well as the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided information on the latest situation in the region, including the latest provocations of Armenia, which continues to transport personnel and military ammunition to the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan, and the steps taken by our country against these provocations without the use of force. The importance of establishing a border control checkpoint between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the beginning of the Lachin road in order to prevent illegal activities in the territories of Azerbaijan was once again noted. The Minister also firmly highlighted Armenia’s non-constructive approaches obstructing negotiations on the peace agreement and emphasized that Azerbaijan is ready to start negotiations on the peace agreement at any moment.
For her part, Karen Donfried emphasized the importance of normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia for regional peace and development. Concern was expressed over the recently escalated situation in the region, and a call was made to resolve all misunderstandings through negotiations. It was stated that the U.S. side is ready to support the process.
At the end of the telephone conversation, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov wished Karen Donfried, who will soon leave her current position, success in her future activities.
