No:194/26, Press release on the summoning of the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On 1 May, Marijana Kujundžić, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the meeting, the groundless and biased provisions against our country contained in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 30 April were strongly condemned, and a note of protest in this regard was presented to the other side.
It was emphasized that the provisions of the aforementioned resolution distort realities and contradict the principles of objectivity, as well as obligations to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It was emphasized that such an approach by the European Parliament negatively affects the normalization process in the region, as well as the prospects of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
It was stated that the allegations put forward in the resolution regarding the return of Armenian residents to the Garabagh region are completely groundless and that such calls constitute interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan. It was noted that, despite the reintegration plan presented in accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan in 2023, Armenian residents left the region on a voluntary basis, and statements claiming otherwise are false.
In addition, it was noted at the meeting that calls for the release of persons of Armenian origin presented as “prisoners of war” are also legally unacceptable. It was recalled that the Azerbaijani side, demonstrating a humanitarian approach, released many prisoners and took steps towards confidence-building, while persons against whom court judgments have been issued are individuals who committed a number of serious crimes, including terrorism, sabotage and war crimes.
It was emphasized that allegations regarding the “destruction of cultural and religious heritage” are completely groundless and unacceptable. In addition, the other side was informed that European institutions did not attach importance to the facts of the large-scale destruction and desecration of Azerbaijan’s cultural and religious heritage during the occupation period.
At the meeting, the European Union side was called upon to prevent such steps that harm Azerbaijan-European Union relations, as well as the peace and normalization process in the region.
